This event will be held at Waterloo Mennonite Brethren Church (in the chapel), 245 Lexington Rd. Waterloo, on June 18, from 7-9 pm. There will be an opportunity for a free-will offering.

This will be our last presentation in Ontario, as we are planning to move out west this summer. We have been so blessed by the opportunities we have had to present, and to meet such wonderful people. May God bless you all.

Presentation: Healthy Self-esteem

Health Self-esteem: Discovering our own personal value, and learning to celebrate what makes us who we are.

Many people struggle with low self-esteem. We are bombarded with messages from within and without, telling us that we just aren't good enough. We are told to connect our worth to our performance or our appearance, and we can be drawn into a constant game of comparisons, where we either look down on others, or ourselves. Bob and Helga Edwards plan to share information to help overcome messages and patterns that undermine our sense of worth. They will also address how to help children develop healthy self-esteem.

Bob and Helga have been married since 1988 and have been Public Speakers and Therapists since 1996. Both have Bachelors’ degrees in Religious Education and Social Development Studies, and Masters’ degrees in Social Work. They plan to speak from their professional training and to include some helpful biblical principles in their presentation.

Education and Support Group for Women

  • Google Calendar ICS

Helga Edwards MSW plans to facilitate an education and peer-support group for women who have been oppressed by patriarchy. Patriarchy is a hierarchical system in which men hold power, and women are largely excluded from it.

-If you are a woman who has not had an equal voice at home or at church,

-if you have been told you must obey men at home or at church,

or

-if you have not been able to express your gifts at church because you are a woman, this group may be helpful to you.

Some planned topics include: how the Bible respects women in its original languages and contexts, recovering from shame messages, coping with grief, setting healthy boundaries, managing triggers, rebuilding self-esteem, what healthy egalitarian relationships look like, stress-management, healthy self-care, etc.

This is a support group (education and peer support); it is not psychotherapy.

Helga Edwards has Bachelors' degrees in Religious Education and Social Development Studies, as well as her Master's Degree in Social Work. In 2013, she received the Delta Epsilon Chi Award for Intellectual Achievement, Christian Character and Leadership Ability, from the Association for Biblical Higher Education. Launched petition to renounce church traditions that are harmful to women

A call to renounce traditions in the church that are harmful to women.

What are these traditions?

  • That only men may hold positions of leadership in the church.
  • That only men may teach the spiritual truths found in the Bible.
  • That men have a position of “authority” over women in marriage.

Why renounce them?

  • They are an example of injustice. They give power to one group of people and withhold it from another, all on the basis of their sex at birth.
  • They foster abuse. The greatest predictor of male violence against women is an environment that teaches men to exert control and authority over female behavior.
  • They have no part in the Christian faith. Despite Jesus’ example of treating women as equals to men, and despite overt statements in the New Testament that women and men are equal “in Christ,” traditions based on Greek philosophy and Roman law became the basis of a male-dominant authority structure in the institutional church. This authority structure then interpreted and in some cases translated the Bible with a systematic bias against women. It is time for this bias, rooted in human prejudice, to be forever disassociated from the life and message of Jesus Christ.

Will you publicly renounce these harmful traditions, while affirming your desire to trust and follow Jesus?

If so, please sign the petition at the following link:

https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/renouncing-church-traditions-that-harm-women

Thank you.

New Book Release: "Addressing Domestic Violence in the Church"

Helga and Bob completed their new book entitled "Addressing Domestic Violence in the Church."  Here is a brief description:

"Women in some churches today are given false information about 'submission' 'headship' and 'marital permanence.' Abusive men take advantage of these harmful mistranslations and misinterpretations of the Bible to justify their violent and controlling behavior.

In this book, the authors wish to educate abused women, churches and domestic violence services about these harmful misinterpretations of the Bible. The authors also address the following topics: teaching that fosters codependent patterns of relating, identifying and responding to abuse, why men abuse, and the danger of enabling abuse to continue.

It is important that church leaders not avoid the topic of domestic violence, but take a leadership role in educating their congregations about abuse, and the importance of equal, loving and respectful relationships."

If you would like Helga and/or Bob to come and speak on this issue, please feel free to contact them.
